The second theory that could be used to motivate the employees of St Andrew’s Catholic College is Vroom’s expectancy theory. Vroom’s theory states that employees that have a number of set goals will be motivated if they have certain expectations. This means that if employees have a positive attitude and a desire to achieve, they will usually work hard to achieve in their area. Unlike Maslow’s and Herzberg motivation theories that are based on needs, Vroom’s theory is a cognitive theory that is based on outcomes. This theory separates effort, which comes from motivation, performances and outcomes. There are certain factors that can contribute to an employee’s expectancy perception they are:
· The amount of support that may be expected from superiors and subordinates
· The quality of the materials and equipment
· The availability of pertinent information
Vrooms theory is based upon three variables:
1. Valence which is values
2. Expectancy which is outcomes
3. Instrumentality which is resources
Valence is the rewards that employees wish to obtain such as money, promotions and so on. Expectancy is the strength of a person’s belief about whether or not a particular job performance is attainable. Instrumentality is that if employees perform well then desirable outcomes will be received. This theory is displayed through the expectancy formula.

The job design that is best fitted to Vroom’s expectancy theory is team building and job enrichment. Team building allows the employee to obtain a sense of ownership and continual responsibility. Job enrichment provides the employee with greater responsibility, power to make decisions, greater variety of tasks and feedback on their performance. The leaders of St Andrew’s college instead of leaving one person in charge of OP selections they can involve a certain amount of employees that would be capable of this task. This will give the employees a sense of ownership and responsibility which will influence their motivation towards their work at St Andrew's.
